A Disappointing Experience: A Customer's Account of Vitacost's Failures
by Mark Cammack, MS December 26, 2024
During the holiday season, many of us are relying on online retailers like Vitacost.com to stock up on essentials for ourselves and loved ones. Unfortunately, customer's experiences with Vitacost has been marred by a series of frustrating events that highlight some significant issues with the company's service.
The situation began when we placed an order on December 16, 2024 only to have it disappear from the account without warning. Despite following up via email and phone, I encountered error messages, unhelpful customer service representatives, and fulfillment promises that were ultimately broken. To make matters worse, the Vitacost Account Verification email, which is supposed to be a secure check on customers' identities, was only sent after the fact – despite previous assurances from customer service representatives that everything was fine.
The account of experiences with Vitacost reads like a horror story:
After the initial order was canceled without warning, I spent a lot of time on the phone trying to get help. First, I spoke with Stacy, who told me that my order had been canceled by Vitacost due to some vague issue with my account verification. Why did this happen since they had been ordered from previously? But then she claimed to have spoken with Jeffrey from the Verification Department, and that everything was fine – just reorder, she said. And so I did.
Unfortunately, this second attempt at ordering also ended in disappointment when the order was canceled again! It was unbelievable.
As if these failures weren't enough, we spoke with Rhea who stated a supervisor named Dwayne would call. He never did. This lack of communication and accountability is particularly galling, given repeated attempts to resolve the issue with Vitacost's representatives.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that Vitacost is owned by Kroger, one of the largest retail companies in the US. We were even called by a representative from Kroger's customer service number (800-576-4377) on December 21, 2024 but they left no message on the answering machine. When calling back, I spoke with customer service person Nick who refused to put us in touch with the caller from Kroger or to assist in any way. Perhaps we should call it the Customer Disservice Department.
The Kroger Corporate Switchboard number (513-762-4000) also failed with no person answering. The system hung up on callers. It seems they want to resolve problems by increasing them.
Online forums and sites show numerous complaints against Vitacost, with responses coming from the Kroger Company at the BBB. It's clear that we are not alone in our dissatisfaction with the company's service. Customers feel betrayed because Vitacost was once considered reliable and is now failing in many ways.
A Call to Action
As we head into the new year, it's time for Vitacost (and its parent company, Kroger) to take a hard look at their customer service policies and procedures. Clearly, there are significant issues with communication, accountability, and follow-through that need to be addressed.
We urge Vitacost to:
• Take immediate action to resolve orders and ensure they are fulfilled in a timely manner.
• Review and revamp their customer service protocols to prevent similar failures from happening in the future.
• Provide clear explanations and justifications for any changes or cancellations to customers' orders.
Only through transparency, accountability, and a genuine commitment to customer satisfaction can Vitacost hope to restore trust with its customers.
